The Wicked Deep Review:
Going into this book I knew that it had mixed reviews, so I didn’t start this book with very high expectations, I’m glad to say that I did enjoy reading The Wicked Deep regardless of the issues I had.
The one thing that I absolutely loved about this book was the atmosphere, the chilling, spooky setting of this recluse town with a magical history was perfect, and the writing did a really wonderful job of conveying the setting. The writing made me feel as if I was really in this mysterious seaside town of Sparrow, Oregon living these events that the characters are living through. The only issue that I had with the writing is that sometimes I thought it gave too much of the story away. I guess the plot twist pretty early on into the story, and I feel as though there were times in the book where some of the writing choices neglected to mention something related to the story, to avoid peoples seeing it’s relevance to the plot twist.
I had ended up not having much attachment to any of the characters except one, I don’t feel like we really get to learn much about any of the characters, and there is one character in particular where I do question how much we are actually learning about them. The majority of the characters I found were flat and one dimensional, none of the side characters held my interest, the characters were very lacking for me.
Additionally, in my opinion, the romance in this book was terrible in my opinion, I didn’t mind that the novel was heavily dependant on the romance, I just didn’t feel any real connection between Penny and Bo. There was a real case of insta-love, and there wasn’t even a real reason for it, I also didn’t like how the romance was handled at the end of the story.
I can see why people loved The Wicked Deep, I’m sad that I didn’t as much but I still found it a very entertaining novel. I did also have some issues with the end of the story and how some of the things ended up being resolved. I feel in love with Shea Ernshaw’s writing style and her ability to create such an amazing atmosphere, I’m definitely planning on reading more of her books in the future.
